Description
In Ayurveda, Cinnamon is known as Dalchini (or Twak in Sanskrit). Much like cloves, it is a warming spice, but it is prized specifically for its ability to improve circulation and “sweeten” the blood.
Key Ayurvedic Uses
Digestive Strength (Agni): Cinnamon is a “Deepana” herb, meaning it kindles the digestive fire. It is frequently used to treat loss of appetite, indigestion, and abdominal cramps.
Blood Sugar Management: Long before modern science confirmed it, Ayurveda used Dalchini to treat Prameha (urinary/metabolic disorders). It helps the body process sugars and carbohydrates more efficiently.
Respiratory Relief: It acts as an expectorant. Mixing cinnamon powder with honey is a standard remedy for clearing the “ama” (toxins) and mucus associated with the common cold and cough.
Circulation & Heart Health: It is considered a heart tonic (Hridaya) that promotes healthy blood flow and helps “scrape” away cholesterol buildup (a property called Lekhana).
Menstrual Support: Due to its warming and Vata-balancing nature, it is often used to relieve painful periods and regulate cycles.
