Description
Shahjeera (often called Shahi Jeera or “Royal Cumin”) is one of those spices that earns its “royal” name by being the more elegant, refined cousin to the everyday cumin (Jeera).
It is notoriously easy to confuse because names like “black cumin” are used for several different seeds, but here is how to keep them straight.
Ayurvedic & Health Perspective
Like most seeds in the parsley family (Apiaceae), Shahjeera is a digestive champion.
Carminative: It is excellent at relieving gas, bloating, and abdominal cramps. Many people chew a few seeds with a pinch of rock salt after a heavy meal to settle the stomach.
Digestive Fire: It helps stimulate Agni (digestive fire) in a gentler way than black pepper or ginger.
Respiratory Support: Traditionally used in decoctions to help clear mild bronchial congestion or coughs due to its warming, antispasmodic properties.
