Description
Indrajav (the seeds of the Kutaja tree) is one of the most powerful digestive medicines in the Ayurvedic pharmacopoeia. Its name, “Indra’s Seed,” signifies its high status as a “heavenly” remedy for clearing the gut of toxins and pathogens.
Primary Uses in Ayurveda
1. Digestive Disorders (Atisara & Pravahika)
This is the most famous use of Indrajav. It is considered a “Stambhana” (blocking/binding) herb
Diarrhea & Dysentery: It effectively stops frequent, loose, or bloody stools by absorbing excess moisture and calming the intestinal lining.
IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome): It is often used to manage symptoms of IBS-D (diarrhea-predominant) by regulating bowel movements.
2. Management of Diabetes (Prameha)
Indrajav (specifically the Karva or bitter variety) is widely used in traditional protocols for blood sugar management.
Insulin Sensitivity: It is believed to help regulate glucose metabolism.
Common Remedy: Many people soak Indrajav, Almonds, and Roasted Chana in specific proportions to help manage sugar levels.
3. Intestinal Worms (Krimihara)
The intense bitterness of the seeds makes them an excellent Anthelmintic.
It helps in expelling intestinal parasites and prevents their recurrence by improving the “Agni” (digestive fire).
4. Skin Health and Blood Purification
Detoxification: Because it clears the gut and liver of Pitta-related toxins, it indirectly clears the skin.
It is used in formulations for chronic skin issues like itching, sores, and inflammation.
5. Fever (Jwara)
It is used in certain Ayurvedic decoctions to treat “Visham Jwara” (recurring or malarial-type fevers) due to its antimicrobial and cooling properties.
