Description

In Ayurveda, the castor seed—known as Eranda—is famously referred to as the “Lion” among herbs for its ability to conquer the “Elephant” of Vata disorders.

While the raw seed contains a toxic protein called ricin, the oil extracted from the seed and the root of the plant are considered indispensable in traditional medicine.

Core Ayurvedic Applications

1. Management of Vata Disorders

Castor is the most powerful herb for balancing Vata. It is used to treat:

Joint and Bone Pain: It is a primary treatment for Amavata (Rheumatoid Arthritis). It helps reduce the accumulation of Ama (toxins) in the joints.

Sciatica and Lower Back Pain: Its warming nature helps soothe nerve inflammation and improve mobility.

2. Purgation and Detox (Virechana)

Castor oil is the most common substance used in Panchakarma for purgation.

Deep Cleansing: Unlike simple laxatives, castor oil is believed to reach deep into the tissues to “bind” toxins and carry them out of the body.

Chronic Constipation: It is used as a lubricant and stimulant for the intestines, helping to clear even the most stubborn blockages.

3. Abdominal Health

In Ayurveda, castor is used to treat Gulma (abdominal lumps or bloating).

It helps in relieving intestinal gas and distension.

Tumors and Cysts: Because of its “piercing” (Teekshna) quality, it is sometimes used in formulations aimed at reducing benign growths.

4. Skin and Hair Rejuvenation

Varnya (Skin Complexion): It is used to treat skin ailments like ringworm, itching, and dryness.

Keshya (Hair Health): Applied topically, it nourishes the scalp and is believed to promote thick, dark hair growth.
