Description

Dhavdi na phool (known as Dhataki or Woodfordia fruticosa) is a central pillar in Ayurvedic medicine, particularly valued for its unique properties in both formulation and direct therapeutic use.

Key Medicinal Applications

Dhataki is primarily classified as an astringent (Kashaya) herb with a cooling (Sheeta) potency, making it excellent for balancing Pitta and Kapha doshas.

Digestive Wellness: It is highly effective in treating diarrhea, dysentery, and irritable bowel issues due to its Stambhana (binding/constipating) property. It helps tighten tissues in the gut to reduce excess fluid and frequency of stools.

Women’s Health: It is a traditional remedy for gynecological concerns, particularly in managing menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding) and leucorrhea (white discharge). It acts as a uterine tonic and helps regulate menstrual flow.

Wound Healing: Applied externally as a paste or wash, its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory action accelerates the healing of cuts, wounds, ulcers, and pimples.

Oral Health: Its astringent properties make it excellent for gum health. It is traditionally used in gargles or as a tooth powder to stop bleeding gums and treat mouth ulcer.

Blood & Urinary Health: Because it belongs to the Mutravirajneeya group of herbs, it is used to manage urinary disorders, including burning micturition (painful urination) and balancing urinary discoloration.

Traditional Methods of Use

As Churna (Powder): Usually 1/4 to 1 teaspoon is mixed with honey or buttermilk to treat digestive issues or bleeding disorders

As Decoction (Kwath): The flowers are boiled in water to create a medicinal wash for wounds or a gargle for dental health.

As External Paste (Lepa): Ground into a paste with water or honey and applied to skin eruptions, wounds, or swollen areas.
