Description
Dhamaso (botanically Fagonia cretica, also known as Duralabha or “Virgin’s Mantle”) is a hardy, thorny medicinal shrub widely used in Ayurveda, particularly in arid regions like Gujarat and Rajasthan.
Ayurvedic Uses
Dhamaso is highly valued in Ayurveda for its ability to balance Vata and Pitta doshas. Its medicinal applications include:
Digestive Health: It acts as a Grahi (absorbent) and is traditionally used to treat diarrhea, dysentery, vomiting, and acidity. It is also believed to stimulate digestive enzymes.
Fever & Infection: Known for its natural antipyretic (fever-reducing) and antimicrobial properties, it is frequently used to manage viral fevers and various infections.
Urinary Health: It is a well-known diuretic and is used to treat dysuria (difficulty in urination) and burning micturition.
Skin & Wounds: Because of its detoxifying properties, it is used for blood purification. External applications (paste or decoction) are common for healing wounds, reducing itching, treating eczema, and soothing skin rashes.
Metabolic & Immunity Support: It is used as an immune booster, and some traditional practices utilize it for managing joint pain (arthritis/gout) and regulating blood sugar levels.
Respiratory Support: Its decoction is used as a gargle for mouth ulcers and gingivitis; inhaled smoke (fumigation) is traditionally used to clear nasal blocks and assist in breathing difficulties.
