Description

Borsali Chhal (also spelled Borsalli Chhal) is the regional Gujarati and Hindi trade name for the bark of the Maulsari tree (Mimusops elengi). In English, it is known as the Spanish Cherry or Bullet Wood tree.

In classical Ayurveda, this tree is named Bakula. While its highly fragrant, cream-colored flowers are famous for making garlands and perfumes, its hard, rugged outer bark (Chhal) is treated as one of the most powerful natural astringents for oral health and tissue healing.

Key Health Benefits & Traditional Uses

1. The Ultimate Remedy for Loose Teeth & Bleeding Gums

Borsali Chhal is most famous for its unparalleled ability to strengthen dental architecture. It contains high amounts of natural tannins that instantly contract and tighten loose, spongy gum tissues (Danta Dridhakara). It stops bleeding gums, treats gingivitis, reduces tooth sensitivity, and firms up teeth that have become loose due to pyorrhea or aging.

2. Healing Stubborn Mouth Ulcers

A warm decoction made from boiling the bark acts as a soothing, highly antimicrobial oral rinse. It rapidly cleanses and heals painful aphthous ulcers, eliminates oral thrush, and neutralizes chronic bad breath (Mukha Durgandhi).

3. Healing Chronic Skin Wounds & Ulcers

Because of its intense cooling (Sheeta) and drying (Rooksha) properties, the bark powder is mixed with water or oil to make a paste for external application on slow-healing skin wounds, weeping eczema, and varicose ulcers. It helps dry up excess discharge and accelerates skin cell regeneration.

4. Natural Treatment for Leucorrhea & Menorrhagia

Internally, a mild decoction of Borsali Chhal helps cool down the blood matrix and contract dilated blood vessels. It is a traditional remedy used to manage excessive vaginal discharge (leucorrhea) and unusually heavy menstrual bleeding driven by aggravated Pitta.

How to Use It (Traditional Methods)

As an Oral Rinse (Gargle): Boil 5 to 10 grams of coarse Borsali Chhal in two cups of water until the liquid reduces to one cup. Let it cool down to a comfortable warm temperature, strain it, and use it to gargle 2–3 times a day for gum bleeding or mouth ulcers.

As a Tooth Powder: Ground the dried bark into an ultra-fine powder. Mix it with a pinch of Baval Paida (Babool pods) and rock salt to create a completely natural, daily-use tooth powder (Dashan Sanskar Churna variant).
