Description
Ankol seeds (from the Alangium salvifolium tree) are considered highly potent in Ayurveda, primarily known for their Vishaghna (anti-toxic) and Rasayana (rejuvenating) properties.
Primary Uses in Ayurveda
1. Toxicology (Agada Tantra)
Ankol is perhaps most famous as a traditional antidote.
Animal Bites: The seeds and root bark are used in various formulations to treat the effects of poisonous bites from snakes, scorpions, and particularly rabid dogs (Alarka Visha).
General Toxins: It is believed to neutralize “Gara Visha” (slow-acting or accumulated toxins) within the body.
2. Skin and Scalp Conditions
The oil extracted from Ankol seeds (Ankola Taila) is a powerful topical treatment.
Chronic Skin Issues: It is used for persistent itching, eczema, and psoriasis due to its antimicrobial and blood-purifying properties.
Lice and Parasites: The oil is traditionally applied to the scalp to eliminate head lice and fungal infections.
3. Management of Pain and Inflammation
Due to its warming nature and ability to clear Vata:
Joint Pain: The seed oil is used as a massage oil to relieve stiffness in arthritis and gout.
Muscle Spasms: It helps in relaxing cramped muscles and improving local blood circulation.
4. Respiratory Health
Kapha Removal: In very small, controlled doses, it is used to expel excess mucus from the respiratory tract, helping with chronic cough and asthma.
5. Rejuvenation and Vitality
In certain classical texts, Ankol is mentioned as a Rasayana herb. It is believed that when processed correctly, it helps in strengthening the body’s immunity and maintaining youthful vigor.
